Our Story

It was May of 2019 when Mel moved to Washington, DC, ready to start a new chapter in her life. She was excited about the prospect of exploring the city and building new friendships. Profit was joking with Zach his barber on May 29 before making a trip to visit his sister in Washington, DC. He told him, “Man. Watch me find my wife out there.”

Fast forward to June 1st, 2019, when Mel's sister, Dana, came home for the weekend and decided they needed a night out. An Afrobeat event hosted by one of Dana's favorite influencers at Decades rooftop was happening, so they decided to attend.

After two overpriced drinks, Mel and Dana hit the dance floor, singing songs (incorrectly) while denying every guy that attempted to get their number. Shortly after a few unwanted encounters, a guy in a blue button-down shirt and a gold chain approached them. Initially, Mel paid him no attention because she was in her own zone.

He respectfully asked for her name and presented himself in such a gracious way. “Profit, what a unique name" Mel thought. Yet, it was still girls night, and Mel was regrettably wearing the same resting "I'm not here for you" face from the last guy. So, Profit excused himself, saying he'd be back.

A few songs later, Mel found herself scanning the room for him, thinking to herself, "Was that my blessing that I just missed?" After some time away, Profit came back. Mel introduced him to her sister, and surprisingly, she turned around and met his—Victoria. They got to talking, and Profit asked Mel incisive questions that made her heart start to flutter. She thought "Is this the Love In The Club that Usher was talking about?"

Sadly, Profit had to leave the event early after what some would call a chance encounter. Mel texted Profit her location in case he wanted to continue the conversation. Within an hour, they were right back where they left off. The night was moving slow yet so fast, knowing he was flying back to Minnesota the next morning. Profit and Mel stood shoulder to shoulder that night, diving deeper into their connection while overlooking the DC skyline. For a brief moment, they both looked at each other in amazement over how similar they were with love and life.

Three years of long-distance relationship building later, two of which persevered through the COVID-19 pandemic—all resulted in a one-of-a-kind beautiful proposal in St. Lucia while celebrating The Hubbard’s wedding anniversary weekend in December of 2022.

Despite all the challenges faced, they grew!

And on September 2, 2023, they plan to transition from "I Do" to Idowu.
